The Bund

The first afternoon I was in Shanghai I wandered about the Bund, the water front area of central Shanghai. It’s a huge tourist trap so it makes for a great place to just walk around and snap photos of random people doing whatever it is they’re doing.

Shanghai

So I went to Shanghai about a month ago to visit an old friend from high school and explore the city a bit. These are the first batch of photos that came out of that trip.

proprietor

The proprietor of a new shop checks on the progress.

strays

Strays at the market are a daily sight.

bikes

Two wheels is the most common mode of transport here, either electronic scooters or old fashioned foot powered bicycles being the two most common around Hangzhou. Gas bikes have been banned from the downtown area of Hangzhou making them impractical for most people.

seamstress

This woman works daily as a seamstress in the tunnel connecting two roads in my neighborhood.

PLA

One of the things that threw me for a loop when I arrived was the amount of kids walking around in Army fatigues from ROTC-like exercises they hold regularly on the neighboring campus.

This guy runs a barber shop out of a garage down the street from my apartment. $.85 for a hot shave. Not bad.

Iglik

Iglik, from Uzbekistan, specifically Karakalpakstan which is an autonomous region of Uzbekistan. He’d be mad if I didn’t specify. Here he is climbing back in the window on the 7th floor, what he was doing outside, I’m still not quite sure.

Kevin

Kevin, or Winter, one of Nick’s good friends from his first few months here. Great guy, even better pants.

fruit-truck

Or oranges. Some citrusy fruit. This guy parked his truck on our street and sold his fruit for the better part of a day. Hadn’t seen him before, haven’t seen him since.

roast-corn

People here love corn. And potatoes. And apparently it never goes out of season as it’s mid-December and people are still eating it all over. This guy has a little oven sort of thing he cooks his corn/potatoes in, this is that machine.
